Culture of Contact Episode 33: Jason Offutt - Haunted Missouri. Haunted World

This podcast contains explicit content | Played: 2191 | Download | Duration: 00:00:00

Ghost Hunter & Historian Jason Offutt takes us through the possibilities of what ghosts might represent in this chilling conversation that also involves shadow people, aliens, time travel, and child molestation! Yeah! We cover it all! And be sure to check out Jason's book, Haunted Missouri and other writings here: www.jasonoffutt.com

NOTE: There's a slight piece of audio missing. Toward the beginning/middle of the interview, after I apologize for thinking out loud re: child molestation, Jason should have said something like "It's okay. Hey! It's your show." For some reason that didn't make it. Ghost in the machine....

This is the image I'm referencing when I talk about the ghost-turned-ufo hunter showing everyone a pic on his cell phone of a craft he worked on at (I believe he said) Skunkworks.

I enjoyed this interview. Both of you guys were funny while still treating the questions posed by the ghostly phenomenon with respect.

At different times in the recent past I willed myself to become "aware" of things around me, those things that usually don't catch my attention. Mostly, I was just trying to better hear the intuitive voice that sometimes warns me of odd events to come, like I'll lose my car key, traffic will be worse on one road into town, etc. I used to know if there were an agitated cop on the road too sometimes.

But in my recent efforts, I saw a couple of shadow figures, heard a ghost dog growl in my kitchen (cat heard it too and reacted) and one night I heard people running on my roof as I lay in bed, well before sleep. Not normal goings on in my world, but none of it scared me at the time. In fact, I was kind of tickled by strangeness. All it took to stop the monkey business was my not paying avid attention.

I'm not sure if that works for other odd phenomena that have occurred in my life so it leaves me wondering if each focus of different events are related simply because one must employ active attention to experience them. Are ghosts related to shadow people/aliens/what-have-you or is it that they just operate in the same sphere of influence?

Whoops. I've obviously blocked my being able to post here in my firewall. I'm cc and the author of the anonymous post.

But another question remains. My cat reacted to the ghostly growl and stared in the direction of the sound for quite a long time. So did my awareness affect her too?

Seems unlikely at this point, so if not, then would that entity necessarily be related to the others I experienced? If not, then they may occupy their own existence within the conscious realm, distinct from others.

Never heard of shadow people until the idea of them became a new meme. It's possible that I'd never have experienced them if I'd never heard of them, yeah.

THEN it all seems to boil down to potential. Sometimes I think the whole shebang relies on our ability to access potential which means nothing is real while everything is. We can discount the whole mess or accept it and we are neither correct or incorrect.

I enjoyed this interview immensely Jer. The guy sounded honest, sincere and didn't seem to have an agenda. He was a reporter in the true sense, writing down what he and other folk witnessed with no pretentions, from what I could tell anyways.

I can't remember if you asked him or not, but you should follow on him in a few months. His reports of shadow people were terrifying, but fascinating.

When he gets that shadow people book together we'll do this again. It will be interesting to see if what he finds is compatible with what Heidi Hollis says about them.

I ain't afraid of no ghost.

Good interview, Jeremy. I would have liked to have heard more scary anecdotes as I was listening to the show during the wee hours. Overall it was a decent introduction to Jason's work and approach; I look forward to hearing more details about the shadow people once he has the book finished. For future reference though, when you have another ghost hunter on, be sure to extract some very, very scary stories out of him/her. Me like scary!

I'm not really sure what ghosts are. Are they shells of the dead, intersections of space/time that we don't comprehend yet, fully conscious and realized entities, projections of the mind? When you are in the presence of the ghostly, you do feel them as their presence has a weight to it, as it were. Sometimes the weight is an emotion impinging on you, other times it's the undeniable feeling of being observed. And sometimes, you just see them. (continued below)

I do think it requires an attuned and receptive mind to perceive these things. For example, I used to live in Toronto with some friends where we rented the main floor of a house from a ghostbuster. This fellow was also a sociology professor at Guelph U, but he had teamed up with a psychic and together they flew around the country attempting to dehaunt houses. The psychic would tune into the ghostly presences and Ian would talk to them through her, encouraging them to go to the light. As hokey as this sounds, they enjoyed a very good success rate at getting the dearly deparated to move onwards and upwards.

The CBC (the Canadian version of the BBC) followed Ian out out to a dehaunting in Nova Scotia which was then played on the radio. The family of 4 (mother/father 2 children) had moved into a 100 year old farm house recently and were being disturbed by the existing ghostly inhabitants. The mother and the children experienced these entities quite vividly, but the father felt and saw absolutely nothing. It was only at his wife's insistence that they decided to seek outside help. In addition to footsteps going up and down the stairs, doors mysteriously opening/closing, the little boy would be kept awake all night with one of the ghosts calling his name over and over again. He would arrive at the breakfast table cranky, circles under his eyes and his pyjamas soaked with rum. Very alarming for the parents.

When Ian and the psychic arrived on the scene, they determined that there were two ghosts: one male and one female. The male was a fugitive who had been shot and had hidden himself in the house to escape pursuit. The woman was in poor health, had TB and was forced to look after him. They had both succumbed to their illnesses. The man was a nasty drunk, always demanding rum, which explains where that scent had come from on the boy's pyjamas. I find it interesting that this rum could transcend the veil between the worlds and deposit itself on the boy's clothes.

Overly long story short, the ghosts decided to give Ian's suggestion a try and departed for the light. The CBC followed up with the family a month after the dehuanting and the wife confirmed that they had indeed left. There are always going to be die-hard skeptics when it comes to this topic, but to those who have gone through these experiences, they need no other proof that it is real.

So basically, a Kafka story is reflected in Dick Cheney's eyes. Go figure.

Hehe. You should tune into the Paracast anyway, they're good stuff. Of course you're bound to hit an episode or two about ghosts so...maybe stay away?

I wanted to branch out and flesh out some of these other paranormal issues to see if they really do smack of "one trickster intelligence acting as many different things." But we'll be back to...well, next week is an unabashed bitching session with Paul Kimball and some UFO stuff--but after that, we'll get to the meat of things again.

I don't do MP3s because they're more of a pain in the ass to create in my program and eat up double the space I pay for. This may change once the mega website goes up. Thankfully, though, we've got Lotus! Yeah!
